Maui Outlets - Grand Opening

Black Friday marked the grand opening of a new outlet center in Lahaina complete with the expected shops--Gap, Calvin Klein, Banana Republic, Guess, Michael Kors and others.

I was in my way to Kaanapali when I decided to make a side stop to check out my favorite Lahaina boutique...which is where I was told about the newly converted shopping center. I had to check it out.

The store spaces are larger than most outlets and the facilities maintain the plazas historic sensibility while offering shoppers a modern warehouse experience.

Does Maui really need an Outlet? I think the idea is that it will help keep business bustling on Front Street...plus it gives opportunities for tourists on tour buses (eg from Asia) to shop and spend their money on Maui. It seemed odd to me to have an outlet (on the island and especially in Lahaina) but its a strategic business move that may fare pretty well.

I also think that the conversion of the buildings was done very well, and im happy to see the once dead space now bustling with life. (I was sad to hear my favorite restaurant, David Paul's, closed down... but I'm happy to see both tourists and locals enjoying the historic space.)

Go now while parking is free. The Outlets are located in the Hilo Hattie complex, and near Ruth Chris and Hard Rock Cafe on Front Street.

Words & the Life Lesson from Yelp

I just had an A-ha! moment about the use and power of words--words that build up versus words that destroy.

In this technologically democratic age, Yelpers, Bloggers, Facebookers, and Twitter-ers have assumed a right to voice, critique, and promote persons, products, and companies according to their fancy. Yelp in particular thrives on this self-centered sensibility and perpetuates a culture of entitlement among its users. "I have the right to critique a restaurant for not satisfying my expectations" for example or "I have the right to give or withhold golden stars to a company that underperforms" (what a flash back to elementary school).

Don't get me wrong, I've used yelp many times, and I believe there is usefulness and a degree of fairness in this public and democratic rating system--a system that rewards honest businesses with honest feedback from everyday citizens (irregardless of the purchasing power for ads); after all individual enterprise and hard work underlies the ideological heart of the American economic system.

What struck me today however, was that as I took a self reflective look at my participation in the yelp culture, I saw how my reviews, for better or worse, impact real people with real lives in real time.

Today I received my first emailed Yelp Note from a European immigrant woman who recently started a house cleaning business. Based on the lack of information, enthusiasm and interest she provided over the phone, I decided to hire a different company...and gave the European woman a one star review complete with the standard practice of justifying my review. I posted my review and didn't think much of it. After all, it's Yelp...and that's what Yelpers do, right?

Or so I thought.

When I read this woman's yelp note, I was forced to consider the impact of my review on her life. Her note read more like a plea to take down my one star review--she said she worked so hard and was so tired everyday that it was hard for her to even tie her own shoe in the morning.

Admittedly my initial response was not one of compassion. I read her note and walked away. I wasn't going to change my review based on a sob story, I told myself. ...But then I stopped and asked, "What would happen if MY life were written up like a Yelp review?" Didn't I sometimes have bad days? Days when I was short with people? Times when Im not so pleasant? Moments when Im tired and speak with curtness? If my life were on Yelp...how many one star reviews would I get?

I'm sure it'd be alot!

And so I thought about the woman who was working hard to make ends meet. And I thought about how much she needed high Yelp ratings...and how little it would cost me to revise my review...and how my one flippant one star rating could possibly compromise her livelihood.

...so I wrote her a personal note...and deleted my one star review.

...and she thanked me.

And I decided today that I will use social media--including this blog--for the sake of building up and not tearing down. I want my words to give life, not bring death.

This blog is a collection of people, places, things and events that I love about Hawaii written with the hope that it would inspire, encourage and equip both locals and mainlanders to enjoy the big and small things that the rich islands have to offer. From this day forward, I am committed to be ever mindful of the use and power of my words so that this site offers life, laughter and a little taste of aloha.

The Modern (Honolulu)

A new hotel I have to check out. Their branding: "A cosmopolitan lifestyle hotel." Clean lined decor. Located off the bustle Waikiki strip, but just close enough in the heart of the tourist district.

Letarte Swimwear (Maui)

My favorite place boutique for swimwear. Details, details. Sometimes dangling with pretty metal accents, these women wears are more for prancing on the beach or across the resort, than swimming in the ocean. Worth checking out. Flagship store in Paia.

Heather Brown (Oahu)

Back in the day before Heather Brown became Heather Brown I used to eye her work. Still remember that eve on First Friday when I made my friends wait 45 minutes as I decided whether or not to purchase one of her prints. It went for $250 back then, now the same print in the same size is selling for over $1,000. Really glad for her.

Her works can now be viewed at the Wyland Gallery on Oahu, the Big Island and Maui. And glicees at MacArthur & MacArthur Oahu and Maui.

Hawaii Five-O Cocktails (Oahu)

Where? At the Hawaiian Hilton Tropics Bar in Waikiki. It's the officially licensed bar to offer this hit TV show cocktail.

Free Waikiki Fireworks (Oahu)

I love fireworks! See them light up the Oahu sky on Tuesday and Friday night at 7:45pm near the Hilton Hawaiian Village. You can see the display from Magic Island or the beach sand near the Waikiki boardwalk.

Lihing Dried Fruit

Sugar and calories I don't need, but oh so yummy. $7 at Walmart.

Anahole Granola

I first discovered this granola over breakfast at the Four Seasons hotel. It was memorable enough that over the past couple years Ive thought about going back there for breakfast more than one occasion.

There are a couple boutique stores that sell small packages (a couple ounces) for $8--which I thought was over priced.

So happy to see it being sold at Whole Foods, and for a much better price these days. I also got word that it'll hit the Costco racks after Thanksgiving! I can't wait!

Tea Forte

Smooth teas with saturated flavors, I found one place on Maui that sells them--the paper/stationery store near Macy's. on Oahu you can buy them at the Origins store at the Ala Mona shopping center. My favorite flavor: pear ginger white tea.

Hawaiian Hello Kitty

This white cat gets a nice tan each year when limited edition plush toys are released baring the latest beach garb. From hula skirts to bikinis and surf boards, Hello Kitty products remain a beloved gift from Hawaii for kids and young at heart adults. (Wed are double stamp days.)

Otaheite (Maui)

Local designers at this Wailea store. The owner's (Tiare) father opened five local shops in the 1970s across the islands and she's opened this boutique decades later in her father's honor. In addition to fashion designing, being a mother and small business owner, she rocks the waves as a top paddle boarder on the island.

Her designs are well priced, $30-45ish.

Filipino CAA Market (Maui)

Never knew where to buy ingredients to cook Filipino food. At this market slash eatery, they serve hot plate lunches Filipino style and have some indoor benches to eat at. Have to say their "boba slush" wasnt really (Taiwanese) boba (tapioca)--it was folled with little brown beans...similar to Vietnamese dessert drinks that serve Lima beans and other veggies in bright colored drinks. It's an acquired taste perhaps.

CAA Marketplace on Lower Main Street, Waikuku Maui.

Mural and Food Truck

Banana Pie - McDs Hawaii

Locals love banana creme pie. Now available at McDs, something to tempt their taste buds for $1. And dont firget to order a side of the Hawaiian breakfast.

Hawaiian Goodies - Costco Sale

Pages of Costco coupons featuring a ton a your favorite island goodies. Sale is for the weekend after Thanksgiving. Boy costco already gets crowded for the holidays, with this incentive it might be a madhouse. :)

Artist Noger (Maui)

Admiring this piece by German artist Ubo Noger. Would love it in the living room. $15,000 at my favorite Maui art gallery, Paia Contemporary Gallery. (They have other amazing artists as well.)

Liquid Aloe Vera for sunburns

So in 2009 I posted how much I like the Aubrey pure liquid aloe Vera, especially when my face burns from the strong hawaii sun. Well, I just found that the aloe Vera has gotten repackaged--for the better. It's now sold in a squirt bottle form so you no longer need to cup your hand and splash it on. So much easier, same liquid formula and cool healing effect. Thanks Aubrey. Sold at Whole Foods.

Boton Rice Candy

Loved these as a kid--little salmon and green colored box with a toy prizes inside, and gently sweet candy with a fun layer of rice paper that melts on your tongue.

Now sold in a humongous size sans the prize, at Costco Hawaii for $20 (and a $4 off coupon next week.)

Makana Candles

Really sweet and pretty smelling candles with island inspired scents. $15 for the small and $28 large.

Sold at speciality boutiques: Nuage Blu (Paia), The Mercantile (Makawao) and Hale Zen (Lahaina).

Local Artist (Maui)

Love this guy's work and had the pleasure of meeting with Richard for a commissioned piece. He "carves" pieces of steel then adds layers of auto-body gloss for a perfect sheen. His pieces have amazing movement and depth. Laboring 60+ hours per piece, Richard charges a reasonable price for these one of a kind pieces. They can be purchased at Maui Hands--if you're lucky. He sells a piece at least every other day, and sometimes they fly off the shelf after an hour after being displayed on the wall.

Big thumbs up for this local construction worker turn passionate artist. What a great story and I wish him much success!

New Hawaii Starbucks Card

Yet another new Hawaii Stsrbucks giftcard. Great for stocking stuffers and special gifts to those on the mainland.

Earl Grey Tea (Maui)

Locally produced this tea is available at Whole Foods, Maui.

Monkeypod Jam (Kauai)

It's one of the prettiest trees around that sprawls wide and high offering a beautiful silhouette as the sun sets--the Monkeypod Tree is my personal favorite tree in the world!

Made in Kauai, a line of artisanal jams are being made under the label "Monkeypid Jam." To my disappointment nothing in the ingredients is made from the tree (it just makes for a pretty label) but the fruits used are locally grown from sustainable farms on Kauai. You can even bring in your old jars to get a dollar off your next purchase.
