Fred Segal - Eco-Chic in '08

Wow, who would have guessed that the popular Santa Monica store would branch in this direction? Maybe with the number of celebs gone green, Fred Segal has found a little niche for their clientèle. Opening this summer, the 1,200 sq ft store specializes in green furniture, baby wear, pet accessories and home items. Something to check out!

Modern Twist on Chinese Chic - "Shanghai Tang"

What sets this line of clothing apart from US and European designers who mimic inspiration from Asian culture, is that the designers of Shanghai Tang are actually from Asia and hence first start with the ethnic pieces in mind followed by the task of giving their clothing a contemporary twist and appeal.

The line seems to celebrate ethnicity and culture in its authenticity, rather than capitalize upon the marketability of them in an imperialist manner. While I would wear the clothes for a lecture on Asian American Studies, celebrities such as Nicolas Cage wear Shanghai Tangs as dressy-casual attire for dinner engagements and public events.

Asian Clad Jeans - "Fortune Denim"

During my last trip to Maui, I walked around my favorite town of Paia and found found a boutique in that carried this fabulous new demin line: Fortune Denim ($270).

Love the Asian Accents: Silver Asian rivets and button in-lay with 24 Swarovski crystals; Satin lined pockets using fabric from the Chinese chi-pao; A personal fortune cookie label sewn into the inner waistband of each jean

What Else I Love:
The denim material is super soft and I personally like the "Karen" cut (bootcut). I appreciate the story of the designer, Karen, a 30-something Chinese American woman from Texas who excelled in school through college and who later chose to follow her passions combining ethnic culture, fashion and entrepreneurship. Way cool!
